We Did It! We Finished Our CWTS 2014 Entry!

12 Mar

If you’ve been following my blog you’ll know that I have been racing to finish my entry for the Creating With The Stars Contest.  You can read back over the Updates  #1, #2, #3, and #4.  I worked so hard because  I didn’t want to enter just one project, or two projects – noooo that wouldn’t be me!  I wanted to enter a whole freakin’ room!  And that’s what I’m doing! Yay!

We’re so happy we did this.  Our daughter has never had a room.  So this project was like giving birth.  We never had the experience of decorating a nursery for her before her birth or any of those fun things.  Even though my husband and I gave up our own room for this, it was a healing project all the way around.

So sit back while I show you Lexi’s new room!

3-12-14-Pic-1

One of our first projects was her coral pink dresser.  Then I added the bedding from H&M that coordinated beautifully.  The pouf came from my son’s girlfriend, Sammy.  It was her “donation” to the cause.  I painted the pineapple headboard in a black satin and DIY’d a pair of lamps in blue with gold hearts.

The coolest, most time consuming project was her faux bois plank wall behind her bed and dresser.  The “planks” are made with poster board, the “nails” are thumb tacks spray painted black and the “paint” is actually my leftover morning coffee that I dipped my paint brush into.  Yes.  I painted on poster board with coffee.  I’ll definitely be writing a future post about the wall!  We live in an apartment and we’re not allowed to paint.  The builder beige walls drive me crazy and temporary wallpaper is not in my budget.  This poster board, thumb tack and coffee faux bois wall came in under $15, including the cup of coffee!

On the other wall I painted a vintage china cabinet in Oceanic Teal by Benjamin Moore.  The cabinet is intended to hold her Barbies.  Right now it has the Barbie RV and Polly Plane inside.  Gotta find those Barbies!  Her chair got redone in white fur.  We made a magnetic chalkboard for above her desk and draped a fleece pom pom garland over the whole thing.  The desk is a very heavy antique and I decided to oil it and leave it as is.  Though I may change my mind and it may become a future project.  And of course we love us some Fiddle Leaf Fig trees.

This chair was $5.00 at a yard sale.  Lexi bought it with her own money!

Above her bed is the gallery wall we made containing all of her art from her art class – and a few choice sayings too!

3-12-14-Pic-6

At the end of her bed sits the Inside Out Dresser.  The globe, owl and wooden BFF were all thrifted.  Above the dresser I hung her class picture.

I had thought about writing a source list for this room, but it would only read like “thrift store, thrift store, yard sale, Craigslist, DIY project, gift from friend” yada yada.  Except the bedding.  The budget for this room was supposed to be only $250, including furniture and bed!  With all the paint and supplies that were bought it came in at about $350 – because good paint can be pricey.

And that’s her room!  Stay tuned for the tutorials for each of these projects.  And of course even though it’s done, it’s never really “done”.  There’s so much more that I want to add!

“Unfinished Project Palooza” Race To Enter CWTS 2014 Update #4

8 Mar

This is my fourth update in my “Race to Enter Creating With The Stars 2014“.  Sadly my entry is not ready.  To stay motivated I’m documenting what I’m doing to get ready – and to make sure my entry’s linked up by March 12th at Midnight EST.  Are you working on a project for Creating With The Stars?  Would you like to join me and be featured on my blog?  Get all the details HERE.

It’s just what the title says here.  My home is an Unfinished Project Palooza.  I probably need therapy to understand why I constantly bite off more than I can chew.  Do I just underestimate things that badly?  Do I have something to prove?  Am I trying to fill empty pits in my soul with projects?  All of the above?

Let me share with you what is happening all around my house right now.

First, this mirror that goes on top of Lexi’s dresser is being painted.  And outlined.  And I have to pick up the new mirror piece I had cut for it from the glass shop tomorrow.  Then it has to be mounted.  Oh, and I also call this “darting photo bombing cat picture”.  Because there’s always a cat trying to get into my picture.  See here, and here.

3-6-14-Pic-3

Next.  This cabinet is completely painted.  Except for the door.  And the backing.  And it has to be reassembled.  I love it though because it’s a pretty blue teal color.  I don’t love it because it took me For-Ever to paint!

3-6-14-Pic-4

Third, one of these got spray painted today.  Well, sort of.  In the middle of spray painting my son called to tell me he’d been in an accident.  Minor fender bender.  Everyone’s okay.  But, it’s just how things work around here when I’m trying to get things done.  Remember this?

3-6-14-Pic-5

These also got spray painted and are waiting to be put up and have curtains attached to them.

3-6-14-Pic-2

Lastly, I got a wild hair at the last minute and decided I didn’t like the color of Lexi’s wall once and for all.  Truth be told I hate all the beige in this apartment.  It’s everywhere.  It haunts me in my dreams.

So this is happening.  Hand painted.  Each one.  Got faux bois?  I do.

3-6-14-Pic-1

So you’re probably wondering how in the heck is she gonna get all this done in just 3 days?

I dunno.

No, really.  Over this weekend my entire family has offered up their time to help me.  It’s going to become a family project.  They are all too sweet.  I’ve made a reasonable schedule through the weekend and I think we can stick to it.  I’ve added some fun things like having pizza together on Saturday and all flopping on the couch to watch a movie Sunday night.  If we’re still talking to each other by then!

I may be working down to the wire on this one so make sure you come back soon!  If anything it’s gonna be really interesting!

“Gold Spray Paint Crazy” Race To Enter CWTS 2014 Update #3

6 Mar

This is my third update in my “Race to Enter Creating With The Stars 2014“.

I think I have a problem.

Gold Spray Paint Decor Accessories

Hmmm.  That’s so negative.  Let me rephrase that.  I have the Midas Touch!  See, everything around me is magically turning gold right now.  I’ve gotten into my spray painting groove and I just.cannot.stop.  I either need a support group or a bank vault to put all this gold into!  I’m enjoying spray painting so much that I even told my husband that the kids better not get in my way, lest they be sprayed gold as well!

It started out with Lexi’s room taking a different and unexpected turn.  All along I’ve been trying to figure out her “style”.  As you know she’s been asking for “Frozen” like, but then picks blue with flowers and bright coral paint.  So we’re working on it.  From what it looks like though, it appears we’re gonna have an “Eclectic Woodland Glam” bedroom!  She loves the little animals and the outdoors, but at the same time is enchanted with sparkly and shiny things.  Add some geometric bright pink evil twin dressers and there you have it.  You heard of it first here on The Home Avengers!

Quite a long time ago I found these 1970′s plastic flower wall hangings.  They were all broken and faded from their original coppery brown color.  I loved them and wanted to use them soo bad – but didn’t know where!  They’re definitely going up in Lexi’s room now.  But first I glued them back together with epoxy and let them sit for 72 hours.  Then I busted out some Krylon Metallic Gold Spray Paint and gave them a few good coats.  They ended up looking like this:

Gold Spray Paint Wall Art

(Don’t mind the blue cabinet in the background, that’s coming to the blog very soon!)  There’s actually 2 wall hangings here that are mirror images of one another and they’ll look perfect on either side of her dresser mirror.

Normally I wouldn’t use Krylon Gold Spray Paint.  It has an almost “rose gold” look that doesn’t go well with many things, but in this case however, the rosy gold will look great with my daughter’s coral dressers.  There’s a great review of all the major brands of gold spray paint on Chris Loves Julia.  They did a side by side comparison like this:

Gold Spray Paint Mash Up

See how rosy the Krylon is?  I have to tell you also, the Krylon can get a little drippy.  You have to shake it really good and it’s temperamental with how you hold it.  That’s not just me either, I’ve read that from quite a few other bloggers.  The beauty of Krylon though is it’s cheap.  Walmart has it for $3.77 a can, so if you’re using lots of gold spray paint on a budget, Krylon may be your brand.  Also, I always spray paint with rubber gloves and a respirator mask.  Because I value my skin and lungs like that.

We found these little critters at thrift stores.  They were dirty and dark.  Here’s the duck we painted:

Gold Spray Paint Ceramic Duck

See those little drips from the Krylon?  Yeah, I’ve got to sand them off and do one more coat.  Drives me crazy.  Anyway, you can see a before picture of the duck because I had it on her dresser when I took pictures for this post:

Thrift Store Ceramic Duck

He had quite a few chips on him and he was just too dark for what Lexi wanted.

This owl was dark red and also came from a thrift store:

Gold Spray Paint Owl

He’s all shiny and happy now.  And lastly this small wooden supply box came from a thrift store too.  You should have seen the crayon drawings on it that some creative child left for me.  They were no match for my can of spray paint though.  Now I’ve got my supplies all blinged out:

Gold Spray Paint Box

I think I’m in that “I love spray painting” phase that many DIY’ers go through.  I’m so excited for my next spray paint project on Friday.  It’s been raining nonstop here in Northern California (which I have no issue with because it’s badly needed!) but it looks like there’s a break in the weather on Friday.  I’m going to visit my friend’s house early with all my outstanding spray paint projects (she let’s me use her backyard because I don’t have one) and spray paint all the day long.  I’m painting Lexi’s headboard and can’t wait to show it to you!

So tell me, have you gone through the “spray paint everything” phase?  Does it ever get better?  Are there any secrets to not getting “spray painters wrist”?  If I keep going like this everything we own will have been sprayed and I’ll need surgery for carpal tunnel.  Really.

“Inside Out Dressers” Race To Enter CWTS 2014 Update #2

5 Mar

This is my second update in my “Race to Enter Creating With The Stars 2014“.  My entry is STILL not ready!  To stay motivated I’m documenting what I’m doing to get ready – and to make sure my entry’s linked up by March 12th at Midnight EST.  Are you working on a project for Creating With The Stars?  Would you like to join me and be featured on my blog?  Get all the details HERE.

So if you’ve been following my blog then you’ve for sure seen the awesome dresser redo we made for our 8 year old daughter Lexi.

Pink Painted Dresser

Today however, I want to introduce you to this dresser’s evil twin.  We’re calling it the “Inside Out Dresser”.

Pink Painted Dresser

Because, I mean, why have one dresser when you can have two for twice the price? I’ve never been a “matchy matchy” sort of person.  I actually loathe bedroom sets where all the pieces match exactly.  The ones that are a gazillion dollars.  I’d much rather have several sort of matching or even completely unmatched pieces in a room.  I just feel like it adds more visual interest.  Maybe I’m the kind of person whose eyes get bored. For the second dresser we used the same paint as the first.  The coral pink color is Benjamin Moore Advance Cactus Flower in Semi Gloss and we also used Benjamin Moore Advance Simply White in Semi Gloss.  We just reversed the color placement.  Basically everywhere that is pink on the first dresser is white on the second dresser, and everywhere that is white on the first dresser is pink on the second dresser.  We’ve had many family debates regarding which dresser we prefer.  My husband prefers the first dresser that is primarily pink and I prefer the second dresser that’s mainly white.  The kids are all equally split. Lexi likes them both though and has smashed her copious amounts of clothing into every.single.drawer. We started off by painting, then sanding, then painting, then sanding – ohhh – about 3-4 times.  We’ve learned that for our tastes it takes that much work.  We like things smooth.

Benjamin Moore Cactus Flower

Once everything was painted, my husband David meticulously applied the detail.  This time we were painting white over pink which didn’t go very well.  To get a nice thick white line on these drawers took 4-5 thin coats of white paint.

DIY husband

The results were well worth it though!

Pink Painted Dresser Drawers

I love how it turned out in her room.  We placed the dresser directly across from the end of her bed, and right before you turn the corner to go into the bathroom that is attached to this bedroom (that’s what that little nook behind the dresser it). It goes so well with her gallery wall and new comforter.

Girl's Blue and Coral Room

I haven’t quite figured out what I’m going to put above this dresser yet.  I’m leaning towards some shelves with some cute shelf brackets from Hobby Lobby. Once again I painted the hardware and feet gold.  We found something new when working on this dresser though, and that is the feet unscrew and completely come off.  This made spray painting them a breeze.  Like a 5-10 minute project!  Too bad I didn’t figure that out on the first dresser where I painstakingly laid on the floor to paint all four feet with a tiny paintbrush.  All the while killing off my brain cells from the fumes of the paint.  Yep, sometimes I do things the hard way the first time!

Dresser feet painted gold

Here’s a picture taken while sitting up on her bed:

Coral Painted Dresser

It’s so cute.  It just makes me happy looking at it!  Just like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_Lf3v_cXZA On a completely random note, my cats have photo radar.  Anytime I clean a room and start taking pictures, a cat wanders into it and totally refuses to move.  Any other folks out there with photo bombing cats?

Photo bombing cat

And lastly, for your blog reading enjoyment today I will keep it real by showing you the other side of this room.  Please cringe with me.

Daughter's messy room

So, uh, I better get back to work. Thanks for stopping by today!  Make sure you check back regularly until March 12 to see if I finish my entry in time!

“I Heart U H&M” Race To Enter CWTS 2014 Update #1

3 Mar 3-3-14-Pic-8

This is my first update in my “Race to Enter Creating With The Stars 2014“.  Like the slowpoke I am, my entry is not ready!  So I’m documenting what I’m doing to get ready – and to make sure my entry’s linked up by March 12th at Midnight EST.  Are you working on a project for Creating With The Stars?  Would you like to join me and be featured on my blog?  Get all the details HERE.

Did you know H&M doesn’t just dress your body, they can dress your home too?  Well I didn’t!

My teenagers received H&M gift cards for Christmas from their Aunt.  It’s their favorite place to shop!  So before heading out to the store we decided to check out the website to get some ideas about what they might want.  That’s when I spied the little “HOME” tab in the upper right hand corner.

But first let me say I have no affiliation with H&M and they are not sponsoring this post.

While perusing their website I soon realized they have such cute bedding!  Here are some of them:

Their prices are awesome too!  Lexi and I went through the duvet covers and she picked out her favorites.  Then I looked at the colors in her room and decided to go with the blue/coral flowers duvet cover that she had picked out.  Incidentally, it didn’t even have a name! Since it’s hard to tell colors online I took a chance and ordered it. It was originally $29.99 for the duvet cover and sham, however I found a coupon code on RetailMeNot.com that brought the price down to $23.  Sold!

And here it is!

Blue Coral Girl Room

When it arrived I realized that the color matched perfectly with Lexi’s Coral Dresser, as well as many of the colors in her Dipped Butterfly Gallery Wall.  My little girl has quite an eye!  It was soft and fit her twin Ikea comforter just right.  As you can see, our boy cat “Prince” likes it too – and he refused to budge from the bed for any of my picture taking!

3-3-14-Pic-5

See how well the duvet cover goes with her dresser?  Perfect match.

Blue Coral Girl Room

I’m trying not to do a straight blue and coral color scheme in here.  I wanted to do something a little different, so in the coming days you’ll see this room get touched with some gold and a little bit of black.  There’s gold in the duvet cover and black is just classic.  I think it will really make her room a little more grown up and less little girl.  I mean, she reminded me she is going to be 9 in April.  Geesh.  Here’s a close up of the pattern:

H and M Duvet Cover

The throw pillow came from a thrift store and it was 99 cents.  It had a zippered cover so I was able to wash it up easily.  Upon closer inspection it came from World Market and was $29.99.  It’s no longer available on their website though.  Thrift store score!

Thrift Store Throw Pillow

Lexi was so funny when I was taking pictures of her bed.  She sat on the floor, played with her Barbies (yes, that IS the Barbie RV down there), watched Nickelodeon on the tablet and had her snack.  She said “Don’t mind me Mom, just keep taking your pictures”.  She even helped me clean before and after the photo shoot.  This child definitely deserves her own room!

Girl Playing With Barbies

Here’s one last shot of the bed and the dresser.  Both her and I are in love with how things are coming along.  Although she did ask me if it could be a little more “Frozen like”.  So we’re working on that!

Blue Coral Girl Room

Wow.  Seeing these pictures makes me realize that I better get to work on her headboard and curtains.  It’s looking pretty bare up there.

Thanks for stopping by today.  Check back for my next post in my “Race To Enter Creating With The Stars 2014” Marathon.  I’ll make it to that Linky Party!

Race To Enter “Creating With The Stars!”

#racetoentercwts2014

#racetoentercwts2014

I’m writing this post because I need your help.  Would you help me? I am absolutely in LOVE with the Creating With The Stars contest over on East Coast Creative Blog!  I’ve always wanted to enter the contest, even when I wasn’t a blogger.  In the back of my mind, one of the many reasons why I started this blog was so that I could actually enter the contest the next time it came around. CWTS LOGO 2014 Sponsors Final

Well, the contest is here folks.  And I’m still not done with my entry. The project that I have planned to enter in CWTS is my 8 year old daughter’s room makeover.  Sure, we’ve done some projects for her room like her dresser makeover:

Benjamin Moore Advance Painted Dresser

And her gallery wall:

Girl's Room Gallery Wall

But there is so much more that needs to be done!  And I really want to enter the room as a whole project.  I know I could probably just enter the dresser, or the painted china cabinet that I’m working on, but I really don’t think it’ll showcase my best effort. So it’s important to me to get the Whole.Room.Done.  I’m impossible like that.

So what I need is some motivation.  I mean, I need some DAILY motivation to get my butt out of bed and work these projects so my entry is done – before the linky closes on March 12th at Midnight, well, actually 9:00 p.m. my time – because I’m all the way out here in Northern California.

What I need is to find other bloggers in the same boat with me.  Maybe you’re a blogger that’s already entered, but you realize it’s not your best work and you want to whip out something else and replace your entry before the linky closes.  Or maybe you want to create something brand new to showcase new talents you’ve developed.  Whatever your situation, if you haven’t entered the contest BUT WANT TO – then I NEED YOU!

Here’s how this is gonna work:

1.  Use the hashtag #racetoentercwts2014 on Instagram or Twitter to show me what you’re working on.  I’m looking for the real, in progress, raw story.  Tag me at @thehomeavengers in your post or tweet so I can find it!  (make sure you also use the tag #cwts2014 so East Coast Creative can see what’s heading their way! Bam.  Just like that.)

2.  Every day starting Monday 3-3-14, I will post your “In Progress” Creating With The Stars entries on my blog AND link back to your blog.

3.  Next, I will take these posts and “Linky Party” the heck out of it (yes, I just used “Linky Party” as a verb) using my 200+ linky party list!  (That I have neurotically maintained in Microsoft Excel, ordered alphabetically and by day of the week of the party).

That’s it!  Some extra promotion for your blog and some extra motivation to keep me working! I’ve learned something about myself and that is I can’t work in a vacuum.  I need to interact with people and the cashier at the hardware store just isn’t doing it for me.  So I need YOU.

Of course, if you’re not in the same boat with me but just want to send some love – well – that’s always welcome too!  Just tag @thehomeavengers on Instagram or Twitter.  The Oscar’s tonight taught me about the power of social media and I want to try it!  I’d love to hear from you.

I can’t wait to see what you send me.

-Kristin

Dipped Butterfly Gallery Wall

1 Mar

I’m so excited to share one of the first projects I did for Lexi’s room!  Here’s her new gallery wall that I put up next to her bed!

DIY Gallery Wall Girl Room

(excuse the blurry cell phone pic!)

Lexi, my 8 year old daughter, takes an art class every Friday after school.  It’s no ordinary art class though, it’s a super duper art class from what we’re seeing.  Lexi gets to use all types of art mediums like watercolors, acrylics and oil paints.  She’s created 3D art and sculptures.  She’s learns all about line and form and drawing techniques.  She’s even learned how to use a hot glue gun, which, as you can guess is a skill every child of a DIY’er should have!

She brings home these beautiful pieces of art and we just knew we had to frame them, so that’s where the idea for this gallery wall was born. I started by going to Ikea and getting 2 white frames, 2 gold frames and 2 black frames to serve as the “base” for the art on the wall.  I knew I wanted to add some 3D Elements which is where the painted vintage butterflies came in.  Finally, I wanted the wall to have a little extra pizzazz which is where the frames quotes come in.  It all came together so nicely! The six Ikea Virserum frames hold art from her art class.  She painted this jellyfish with watercolors:

Watercolor Jellyfish

And the sheep she painted in this picture were actually dotted with a pencil eraser dipped in white acrylic paint:

DIY Sheep Painting

She also painted a squirrel, a bird and a pair of swans that are adorable.  She even drew the cutest picture of our family! Once the art was all chosen I needed some 3D pieces.  I had picked up these vintage butterflies at a thrift store for 49 cents each and they were perfect, but I wanted to give them a modern look.  So why not give them a dipped look?  First I painted them white and then I taped off a line or two on them with Frog Tape.  I used the line to make the edge where the color meets the white.  I posted this picture on Instagram to show my progress:

Painted Dipped Butterflies

I used old paint from other projects.  Like the teal from the nightstand I redid and one of the pinks that didn’t get chosen for the Lexi’s dresser redo. They turned out really cute!

Finally I wanted to add some sayings that reflected Lexi’s vibrant outgoing personality.  These were all free printables that I found on the internet!  The frames are all from the thrift store and I used leftover project paint on some of them. I found this one at Landee See Landee Do:

To plan it all out on the wall I traced the outline of each piece of art on construction paper and cut it out.  I noted on each piece of paper which piece of art it was and the frame color and then I spent an hour or so taping and rearranging them on my daughter’s wall.  I was striving for balance in the frame colors and wanted to ensure that no two matching frames wound up next to each other.  I think the layout worked so well!  The black frames are in opposite corners as are the white frames.  The gold frames are dispersed pretty evenly and the butterflies are balanced out.  It was a lot of fun!  I posted this on Instagram while I worked everything out.  And that yellow Frog Tape was awesome to work with!

DIY Gallery Wall Planning

Ignore the unmade messy bed, and the half done dresser – and join me in enjoying just how cute this is!  More and better pictures of this wall to come.  We’ve got huge downpours of rain here in Northern CA (good thing too, we need it!) and I need more sunlight in her room to get better pictures.
